Turner Seniors Club takes up the green challenge

ACT Minister for Ageing and Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Water on Thursday 14 May 2009 publicly acknowledged the efforts of the Canberra Seniors Centre in Turner for taking up the green challenge. The Ministers joined senior Canberrans at an event to celebrate the installation of 24 photovoltaic panels at the Centre. Crimestoppers: Witnesses sought to burglary on 7th May 2009 of Ainslie newsagency

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an aggravated burglary which occurred at the Ainslie Newsagency Thursday May 7, 2009 Around 2.55am a silver Hyundai Excel stopped in front of the shop located on Edgar Street. The vehicle’s lights were shone into the store front for about a minute before a man exited the car and took up a position near the entrance. The driver then reversed up to the store and nudged the plate glass window twice before it shattered.

New home for Majura ACT SES unit in Hackett

The Minister for Police and Emergency Services has officially opened the new home for the ACT State Emergency Service Majura unit at Hackett. The Majura ACT SES Unit has approximately 25 members. The functions of this Unit are storm response, support to land searches, logistical support and flood boat support for various operations and community events. Sir John Hackett Essay Competition (Entries open until 15 August 2009)

All young people living in Hackett and in school years 5-12 are invited to enter this competition being held by the Hackett Community Association with the support of local schools and the Australian Dictionary of Biography.  Essays should be 250-500 words long for Years 5-6; approximately 600 words for Years 7-8; 900-1000 words for Years 9-10 and 1000-1200 words for Years 11-12. Alert: Bonded asbestos discovered on Mount Majura in gully behind Mackenzie Street

ACT Parks Conservation and Land staff have advised the convener of the Friends of Mt Majura that that old construction material containing bonded asbestos was discovered on Mount Majura in a gully behind Mackenzie Street. Individuals should notify Canberra Connect on 13 22 81 if they see any dumped construction material on public land including the nature reserves that may contain asbestos. Canberra Connect will collect relevant information and pass it on to the appropriate authority.  Individuals with access to a GPS should record the coordinates.
