Canberra Pedestrian Forum: Submission to Australian Road Rules

The Canberra Pedestrian Forum represents and promotes our rights and interests as pedestrians in Canberra, in much the same way that the NRMA, Pedal Power and the Motorcycle Riders Association represent our interests as drivers and riders. They have made the following submission in relation to the Australian Road Rules 9th amendment package, relating to Rule 232: Crossing a road at traffic lights. The Submission is reproduced below:

Concern regarding new ASIO building

If you are concerned about the construction of the ASIO building adjacent to Campbell on Parkes Way and Constitution Avenue, whether because of its size, because of the inappropriateness a security agency in such a symbolic location, or because of the almost total lack of public consultation, then please look at some of the suggestions below as to what you can do, to either turn the tide or to help guarantee better consultation in future.

Public Consultation: Roadside memorials (closing 16 October 2009)

The Department of Transport and Municipal Services has released a discussion paper and is seeking public comment on roadside memorials which will assist in the development of a formal ACT Government policy on the placement of roadside memorials in the ACT. The ACT Government recently made a commitment to develop a policy for the placement of roadside memorials. The policy will also outline how the views and impact on residents in adjacent properties are to be considered

Reminder: 2010/11 ACT Budget Consultation closing soon (Closing 28 September 2009)

The opportunity to provide input, make written submissions and/or proposals for the 2010/11 ACT Budget closes on 28 September 2009. The ACT Department of Treasury is seeking input from interested community and business groups, industry, unions and individuals to share their views and suggestions on the key savings measures and options for raising revenue for consideration in the 2010-11 ACT Budget.

New traffic pressures in North Canberra expected

Residents of inner north Canberra suburbs can expect a major increase in traffic in their suburbs unless new local traffic arrangements are developed. That was a key message delivered by Mr Tony Gill in his presentation to the North Canberra Community Council on 19 August. Mr Gill, Director of Roads ACT, outlined a number of major traffic developments that will affect North Canberra residents in different ways.

Invitation to comment: Inquiry Into RZ3 and RZ4 Residential Development Policies (closing 16 October 2009)

The Standing Committee on Planning, Public Works and Territory and Municipal Services invites interested individuals and organisations to prepare a submission to an inquiry into RZ3 and RZ4 residential development policies – Inner North Canberrat. The Committee will be evaluating issues related to the RZ3 (Urban) and RZ4 (Medium Density) residential redevelopment policies applying in north Canberra along the major transport corridor of Northbourne Avenue and surrounding areas. Invitation to comment: Review of the Human Rights Act 2004 (closing 12 October 2009)

The ACT Government is seeking feedback on the operation of the ACT Human Rights Act 2004. The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking submissions from individuals and interested organisations on the recommendations made by the independent ACT Human Rights Act Research Project (ACTHRA).
