ABC News: Canberra Airport to 'shoulder Sydney overload' (Aircraft Noise)

ABC News is reporting that the Canberra Airport is extolling  its curfew free status to become the defacto second airport for Sydney as well as indicating an almost obscene willingness to take excess air traffic from Newcastle, Bankstown and Richmond. The North Canberra Community Council has consistently campaigned for the introduction of a night-time curfew at Canberra Airport to protect the amenity of residents. The airports eagerness to accept additional air traffic simply confirms the Council’s fears that Canberra Airport will use its curfew free status for dumping night-time aircraft movements in to Canberra. These aircraft movements would not be …

An open letter from the committee of Curfew4Canberra and details of their upcoming Annual General Meeting: Dear C4C Members, Friends and Supporters, It is now over 6 weeks since the Federal Minister’s disastrous decision to approve a 24-hour freight hub at Canberra Airport – a very sad day indeed for the Canberra we currently know and love. C4C’s committee recently met for the first time since this decision. We decided it was time for a frank letter to our members, friends and supporters, so here goes. The C4C campaign now finds itself in a very different era following Minster Albanese’s …

ABC News: Curfew only solution to airport noise: residents

ABC News is reporting that the Canberra Airport is reacting defensively knowing that it has issues regarding noise from its proposed 24 hour freight hub. Whilst the Canberra Airport has published selective information regarding the effects of aircraft noise on a number of areas affecting Canberra and local region, the information is deliberately misleading as it is for newer passenger aircraft and not older, noisier aircraft that are most commonly used for actual freight operations. Aircraft used for freight operations, for the most part, are older aircraft that are converted after they have served out their useful life in passenger …

Curfew4Canberra: Noise readings ring death knell on 24-hour airport hub

Curfew for Canberra a group formed  in response to Canberra Airport’s proposal to massively expand its operations to include a 24-hour passenger and freight hub, and become Sydney’s second airport without a night-time curfew to protect sleeping hours from aircraft noise, released the following media release on 19 July 2009: First readings from the Hackett Noise Monitor1 confirm what residents’ ears have long been telling them – aircraft noise is experienced in North Canberra at levels that will disturb sleep if the proposed 24-hour freight and passenger hub goes ahead. A new report by Airservices Australia shows that aircraft can …

Chronicle: Freight hub still draws ire

The June 30  2009  edition of the  Chronicle ran a story written by Elliot Woods about the negative health effects that will be experienced should the proposed 24 hour freight hub go ahead at the Canberra Airport.  Curfew for Canberra convener Jenny Savigny explains the experience that Europe has had with late night aircraft noise.

Canberra Airport master plan, mixed bag with no real industry support

In November 2008, the Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese rejected Canberra International Airport’s draft master plan on the grounds that it did not provide enough detail on the proposal to develop the airport into a freight hub and the airport’s community consultation had been insufficient. The Minister was quoted at the time as saying “The public have the right to know how this development could impact on their homes and the airport’s response to these concerns has been inadequate.” As a result of the rejection of the original master plan the Airport has had 180 days to resubmit their revised …

NCCC Submission to Canberra Airport Draft Preliminary Master Plan 2009

The North Canberra Community Council recently made a submission in response to the Canberra Airport Preliminary Master Plan 2009. The key recommendations from the NCCC submission are: That the PDMP 2009 should be rejected. That a 11pm to 6am night time curfew be introduced in Canberra. That the consultation process should be revised before CIA is allowed to present its revised PDMD to prevent conflicts of interest. Consultation should be carried out by policy-making government agencies, like Airservices Australia, not by CIA. A full copy of the NCCC submission is also available for download in PDF format.
