DEVELOPMENT Emotions run high at public housing planning discussions

By Mark Sawa, Canberra Chronicl Seven more sites have been identified as part of a broad public housing strategy stretching across several parts of the ACT. Representatives from the Community Services Directorate and the Economic Development Directorate gave presentations on the Draft Omnibus Territory Plan Variation to both the Belconnen Community Council and the North Canberra Community Council last week. The variation groups 17 individual sites together across Canberra’s north and south.

Invitation – Launch of Northside Community Service Report on Social Inclusion amongst Older People (10 May 2010)

Northside Community Service (NCS) will launch the report Breaking Down the Wall: Barriers to Social Inclusion amongst Older Australians in Canberra on Monday, 10 May 2010. Over the past 12 months, NCS has undertaken research aimed at creating a basis of awareness about various issues affecting social and community participation of older people living in Inner North Canberra. The result of this study is a report that examines the nature of social inclusion among people over 60 years, highlights the key barriers to social inclusion and explores gaps in services. Seniors Week 21-28 March 2010

ACT Seniors Week will run from Sunday 21 to Sunday 28 March 2010. There’s an action-packed program throughout the week featuring indoor and outdoor activities, as well as a range of information sessions specifically aimed at older people. The week-long program is designed to celebrate older Canberrans, demonstrate their contribution to the local community, and also give those who are willing the chance to try something new. Free travel on ACTION buses for seniors (22-26 March 2010)

ACTION is providing free Off-Peak travel for holders of an ACT Seniors Card during Senior’s Week from Monday 22 March to Friday 26 March 2010. Off-Peak is any time (weekday) between 9.00am and 4.30pm and again after 6.00pm. Canberrans 75 years or older are also entitled to free travel on ACTION buses at any time using an ACTION Gold Card. To receive your free Gold Card visit a Canberra Connect Shopfront or the Drivers Licence Service in the Civic Library. Application forms are also available online at www.action.act.gov.au

Multicultural aged care seminars (February-March 2010)

ACT Health invites you to a series of free seminars on issues affecting older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Seminars on different topics are held regularly and are in English. All interested members of the community are welcome to attend.
