Second-hand Sunday is a free community event that gives everyone an opportunity to give away or collect unwanted but useable items from homes across the ACT. Alert: Bonded asbestos discovered on Mount Majura in gully behind Mackenzie Street

ACT Parks Conservation and Land staff have advised the convener of the Friends of Mt Majura that that old construction material containing bonded asbestos was discovered on Mount Majura in a gully behind Mackenzie Street. Individuals should notify Canberra Connect on 13 22 81 if they see any dumped construction material on public land including the nature reserves that may contain asbestos. Canberra Connect will collect relevant information and pass it on to the appropriate authority.  Individuals with access to a GPS should record the coordinates. Reminder: Daylight Saving Ends – 2am, Sunday 5 April 2009

Before going to bed on Saturday night ensure that your clocks have been set back one hour to allow for the end of Daylight Savings which finishes at 2am Sunday morning. Since 2008, the daylight saving period in the ACT has started on the first Sunday in October and ends on the first Sunday in April. This ensures that the Daylight Savings arrangements are aligned with New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.

You may have already seen the TV, print, and radio or online advertisements for the Measure Up campaign. Measure Up is a joint Australian, state and territory government initiative that aims to encourage Australians to make and sustain healthy changes to their lifestyle, such as increasing physical activity and adopting healthy eating habits, to reduce their risk of some lifestyle related chronic disease. Temporary closure of a section of Mount Ainslie Nature Reserve (Hackett Transfer Station)

Director of Parks, Conservation and Lands (PCL), Russell Watkinson today informed Canberrans that the old tip site area (Hackett Transfer Station) within the Mt Ainslie Nature Reserve will be closed temporarily from today, Tuesday 24 March 2009, due to remedial works. “PCL has been made aware of environmental contamination on the old tip site within the Mt Ainslie Nature reserve. The five hectare site is approximately 400 metres east of the Phillip Avenue and Kellaway Street intersection in Hackett.

ACTPLA reviewing provisions – residential mid size blocks (>250m2 to 500m2) in greenfield estates
