Chronicle: Redundant by 2026 – $250 million traffic solution

The August 25 2009  edition of the  Chronicle ran a story written by Rebecca Thisleton reporting on the proceedings at the August meeting of the North Canberra Community Council where the Majura Parkway was discussed. In the April 2009 Hackett Neighbourhood Watch Newsletter mention was made of a copy of a sample letter being made available online, so it could be copied and sent to the Chief Minister in regard to the Hackett traffic issues. What’s the problem? Over the last 3-4 years there has been a growing problem with cars (and even private buses) using Hackett as a shortcut to get priority access to Majura Ave.  The fundamental problem is that east Gungahlin is being developed without sufficient consideration given to transport routes in and out of the suburbs.  This results in significant congestion on existing routes such as Northbourne Ave.  To avoid the congestion there, cars are turning left from the Federal highway and going down Antill Street with the aim of getting onto Majura Ave and then Limestone Ave.  Faced with delays …

Knox Street Traffic Issues

The Watson Community Association has a concern about the nature, volume and impact of traffic on Knox street. Some queries were sent to Roads ACT in regard to the outcomes of a traffic study conducted at the Knox Street and Antill Street intersections between Saturday September 20 2008 and Saturday 27 September 27 2008 – attached are documents relating to those queries and the study. In past couple of weeks, there has several stories that have highlighted the significant power that property developers have over people’s lives and the need for their practises to be properly regulated. At last week’s NCCC General Meeting, the issue of integrated planning came to the fore during the Suburban Land Agency’s (SLA) presentation on the indicative land release program in North Canberra over the coming years. One of the areas of focus was Watson Section 76 (a greenfield site between Aspinall Street and the Federal Highway).
