In accordance with the Airports Act 1996, Canberra International Airport is required to prepare and submit a draft Master Plan for the approval of the Minister for Transport and Regional Services, for a 20 year horizon every five years. An integral part of that process includes the Airport accepting and considering submissions from the public and engaging in community consultation. Draft Variation 261 to the Territory Plan was tabled in the Act Legislative Assembly on Tuesday March 24. If the matter is not disallowed within five sitting days, DV261 will be automatically approved. ACTPLA has announced that Canberrans will have now have access to the latest planning news via a new publication – The Community Zone The ACT Planning and Land Authority Chief Planning Executive Neil Savery said “The Community Zone” would include stories about major planning projects, draft variations to the Territory Plan and helpful tips and information about the planning process.

Canberra International Airport is planning massive expansion under its latest draft Master Plan. It wants to become Sydney’s second airport, including a 24-hour airfreight hub. Unlike Sydney, we don’t have a night time curfew. There will be bigger planes with much greater frequency – up to 1 plane movement every 2 minutes.
