NAIDOC celebrations are held around Australia in July each year to celebrate the culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The ACT Department of Territory and Municipal Services has published an Official Program of Canberra Events for NAIDOC Week 2009.
The NAIDOC Week theme for 2009 is Honouring Our Elders, Nurturing Our Youth. The significance of the theme is to encourage communities to acknowledge the status of its elders as leaders and role models for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth.
NAIDOC recognises the survival of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and the Indigenous contribution to modern Australia. The week is celebrated not just in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, but also in increasing numbers in the wider community in government agencies, schools, and workplaces.
