Cotter Dam enlargement development notified (11 July 2009)

Cotter Dam enlargement development notified

The enlargement of the Cotter Dam is a step closer following the notification today of a development application for the project.

Chief Planning Executive Neil Savery said the application was notified in the Canberra Times, with application details available on the ACT Planning and Land Authority (ACTPLA) website.

“Actew is proposing to enlarge the Cotter Dam reservoir from its current capacity of 4 gigalitres to 78 gigalitres.”

This will increase total storage capacity for the ACT region by 35 percent.

Mr Savery said the development application followed the completion ofthe environmental impact statement (EIS), which could also be viewed on ACTPLA’s website along with the report on the EIS.

“The proposal includes: the main dam and associated engineering infrastructure, construction of two saddle dams on the right abutment ofthe existing dam, the establishment of a quarry on the ridge to the west of the dam wall and bulk earth works relating to the stripping of the abutments.”

Mr Savery said the notification period for the development application is 15 working days or three weeks. Anyone wishing to comment can do so until close of business July 31.
