FoMM: February 2010 Newsletter

Friends of Mount Majura (FoMM) is a Park Care Group, working in the Mount Majura section of Canberra Nature Park. FOMM: Assistance sought to water tree and shurb seedlings (22 November 2009)

The Friends of Mount Majura are looking for volunteers with some spare time to to help with the watering of tree and shrub seedlings planted in 2009 this coming Sunday, 22 November 2009. You’ll get to see native grasses – wallaby, spear, red leg – flowering and setting seeds for the first time in many years as well as seedlings of Kurrajong (Brachychiton populneus). You will also appreciate how effective recent rabbit control measures have been.

FOMM: Help Mapping Rabbit Warrens, Field identification & training sessions (12 November 2009)

Volunteers are invited to participate in a second round of mapping rabbit warrens at Mount Majura, Mount Ainslie and the Watson Woodlands. Come to the information session on 12th of November 2009 to learn about the the mapping project with sessions led by rangers from ACT Parks, Conservation and Lands. What to expect: Volunteers will learn about the project Learn how to identify active warrens Be able to register for a free GPS training session Be able to “adopt” your own mapping site.

Mountain Matters: Explaining Change in the Mount Majura Nature Reserve

For those of you who walk in Mount Majura Nature Reserve (MMNR), this information may be of interest. When next you walk past the Lower Hackett Reservoir, you will notice a new and unusual fenced area just behind the reservoir on the right hand side of the green Reserve notice board. This fenced area is another example of the Friends of Mount Majura (FoMM) at work on behalf of the Hackett community. Here is what it is all about.

FoMM: Mount Majura Horehound Blitz (20 September 2009)

In this working bee the Friends of Mount Majura will tackle a horehound infested area between two major re-vegetation sites, the National Tree Day 2009 planting area and the drainage line planted with local shrubs to assist the establishment of a wildlife corridor. They hope to achieve some weed free passages between the plantings sites to reduce the spread of seeds by pedestrian traffic. The long term goal is to remove horehound from the whole area which will benefit native revegetation.

Ranger Guided Tour: Gang Gangs at Canberra Nature Park (19 September 2009)

The Friends of Mount Majura in conjunction with Parks, Conservation and Lands  are organising a Ranger Guided Discovery Tour to view the magnificent Gang-gang cockatoos in their natural woodland habitat at the Majura paddocks.
