Public information session regarding the Majura Parkway EIS (8 July 2009)

A public information session on the Majura Parkway Environmental Impact Study (EIS) will be held Wednesday, 8 July 2009 at the Dame Pattie Menzies House in Dickson from 7.00pm to 9.00pm. The ACT Government has extended the public consultation period on the draft EIS by two weeks until 13 July 2009. Anyone with questions about the EIS or this significant infrastructure project is invited to attend the information session. Representatives from Roads ACT will be available to answer any questions and to explain this major infrastructure project.

NCCC Media Release 22 June 2009 The Chair of the North Canberra Community Council (NCCC), Jochen Zeil, has called for more information on the proposed Majura Parkway Realignment and a public information meeting on the new road. The future of Majura Pines – Have your say

The ACT Government is seeking community feedback on the future use of Majura Pines as a recreation venue in Canberra’s north. Since the late 1980s, Majura Pines has become a venue for mountain bike riding, trail running as well as other recreational pursuits. Following recent forestry operations and construction of the Majura Parkway, Majura Pines currently has around 10 kilometres of fire trails and short sections of unlinked informal trails providing recreational opportunities for the community.

The Elephants in Majura Valley

The North Canberra Community Council (NCCC) has questioned the proposed route of the planned Realignment of Majura Road. The Chair of NCCC, Jochen Zeil, has said that while the NCCC agrees that an Upgrade to the road is needed, the proposed Realignment is more expensive and more damaging to both heritage values and to endangered ecological communities, compared with upgrading the existing road. Canberra Times: Stanhope eyes ACT funds for parkway

The 30 January 2010 edition of the Canberra Times is reporting that the ACT Government has revealed for the first time that it is willing to provide $125 million of the estimated cost to construct the Majura Parkway. It has also revealed that it wishes to redirect the $30 million allocated from Infrastructure Australia to fund the initial portion of the Majura Parkway to other road projects in Fyshwick. There are another seven infrastructure projects in the ACT government’s infrastructure wishlist pitched at Infrastructure Australia. The article has been reproduced berlow:

At last week’s NCCC General Meeting, the issue of integrated planning came to the fore during the Suburban Land Agency’s (SLA) presentation on the indicative land release program in North Canberra over the coming years. One of the areas of focus was Watson Section 76 (a greenfield site between Aspinall Street and the Federal Highway). The SLA noted the Place Plan for the area identified key themes for the future planning of Watson, such as ‘active people’ and ‘sustainable living’.
