Crimestoppers: Missing man – Lake Burley Griffin (30 August 2009)

Crimestoppers logoAt approximately 12.40 pm this Sunday August 30, a 30-year-old Canberra man was reported missing after last being seen on a surf-ski on Lake Burley Griffin between Springbank Island and Black Mountain Peninsula.

An extensive search utilising ACT Policing resources and ACT Ambulance Southcare is currently being conducted in the area to locate the man.

The 30-year-old male was wearing a black polo fleece jacket, black shorts and a black bucket or wide brimmed hat. ACT Policing is appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the man on Lake Burley Griffin at approximately 12.40 pm Sunday 30 August 2009 to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers.

    ACT Policing Water Police officers searching Lake Burley Griffin for a missing Jerrabomberra man have this morning (September 6) found his body.

    The body of 30-year-old Peter Morrison was located around 9.30am about 30 metres off Springbank Island, within the original search area identified by police. A report will now be prepared for the Coroner.

    Officers from the Water Police team have been searching the lake daily since Mr Morrison went missing last Sunday, and Detective Sergeant Ian Faulds says that although this is upsetting for the family, they are pleased that their loved one has been found and they can now move on with their grieving process.

    ACT Policing is seeking to locate a kayaker who was rescued from Lake Burley Griffin yesterday and who may be able to assist with information about a 30-year-old Canberra man who missing in the same location around the same time Sunday, August 30.

    The kayaker was rescued from his overturned craft by members of the Canberra YMCA Yacht Club when high winds on the lake whipped up difficult conditions.

    The rescued kayaker is believed to be aged in his 40s and may have the name of “Rod”. He was taken back to the yacht club after his rescue and made his own way home.

    Police would urge this man to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, via the website (www.act.crimestoppers.com.au), or Police Operations on 131-444.

    The police search for the missing man continued from dawn to dusk Monday, August 31 and involved 17 police, including five divers and two support divers. The search effort was made arduous today by very cold water temperatures and low visibility in the lake.

    The man went missing in windy and choppy conditions on the lake between 11.30am and 12.30pm yesterday as he attempted to paddle his surf ski from Springbank Island to Black Mountain Peninsula.

    The police search will resume at first light Tuesday, September 1.
