The Canberra Pedestrian Forum represents and promotes our rights and interests as pedestrians in Canberra, in much the same way that the NRMA, Pedal Power and the Motorcycle Riders Association represent our interests as drivers and riders. Their next public meeting will be Date: Monday 14December 2009 Time: 19:00-21:00 Venue: Conservation Council, 3 Childers St, Acton They will be undertaking a Strategic Planning Workshop to develop a Vision, Mission, Aims and Objectives for the Canberra Pedestrian Forum (or its successor).

ABC News: Canberra Airport to 'shoulder Sydney overload' (Aircraft Noise)

ABC News is reporting that the Canberra Airport is extolling  its curfew free status to become the defacto second airport for Sydney as well as indicating an almost obscene willingness to take excess air traffic from Newcastle, Bankstown and Richmond. The North Canberra Community Council has consistently campaigned for the introduction of a night-time curfew at Canberra Airport to protect the amenity of residents. The airports eagerness to accept additional air traffic simply confirms the Council’s fears that Canberra Airport will use its curfew free status for dumping night-time aircraft movements in to Canberra. Invitation to comment: Reducing Speed Limits around Shopping Centres and Community Facilities (closing 18 December 2009)

The Department of Territorial and Municipal Services is seeking public comment on the issue of reducing speed limits around shopping centres and community facilities to 40 km/h. Background Speed management is a critical component of establishing a safer road system. Reducing speed limits in areas where motor vehicles need to share the road with significant numbers of pedestrians and cyclists is in line with best practice road safety principles.

The Canberra Pedestrian Forum represents and promotes our rights and interests as pedestrians in Canberra, in much the same way that the NRMA, Pedal Power and the Motorcycle Riders Association represent our interests as drivers and riders. Their next public meeting will be Date: 24 November 2009 Time: 17:30-19:30 Venue: Meeting Room 3, Griffin Centre, 20 Genge St Civic. They  will be considering their priorities for the ACT Road Safety Strategy 2011-2016, and whether to re-shape the Forum to maximise its long-term effectiveness at promoting pedestrian interests.

ACTION Buses, every 15 minutes – REDEX Trial services commences 16 November 2009

The ACT Government’s trial of a new, high frequency weekday bus service, REDEX, commences Monday 16 November. REDEX buses run every 15 minutes from 7.00am and 7.00pm between the Gungahlin Market Place and Canberra Railway Station in Kingston, via Mitchell, Northbourne Avenue, the City, Russell and Barton. All REDEX buses are low-emission, wheelchair accessible and provide bike racks and on-bus information screens. Travel on REDEX buses is free for the first week between 9.00am and 4.30pm to encourage commuters to use the service in off-peak periods. Canberra Times: Review urges transport overhaul

In the Canberra Times, 11 November 2009, city reporter Megan Doherty writes about the major review of Canberra’s cycling and pedestrian networks. The article discusses the possible introduction of separated and protected bike lanes. Good information about what defines the “Copenhagen-style” protected bike lane can be obtained from the City of Melbourne website.
