Grevillea Park Master Plan – Drop-in information session 19 November

The Chief Minister, Treasury and Economic Development Directorate invites you to attend a drop-in information session regarding the Grevillea Park Master plan. The Master plan has been developed using urban design and planning principles to provide a vision for Grevillea Park as a recreational hub for community use. The National Capital Authority, which is responsible for the management of Lake Burley Griffin, supports the development of water-based recreational facilities at Grevillea Park.

Parkes Section 3 Community Engagement

Public comment is sought on the future development of Parkes Block 6 Section 3. The site is located at the south east corner of Constitution Avenue and Coranderrk Street and is bounded by Parkes Way to the south. The proposed design will be available for public comment from 26 June 2014 to 7 August 2014 through a range of methods, including the following information sessions:

Report supports Braddon Club site for community purposes

A North Canberra Community Council survey shows that North Canberra residents want the Braddon Club site to remain available for community purposes such as recreation, community activities or a playing field. “The Braddon Club site was part of the Northbourne Oval from 1925 until 1998. In 2006 the Canberra Raiders paid $420,000 for a lease that allows them to use the site only for the purpose of a club, and prevents them from selling it without the approval of the planning and land authority. Canberra Raiders take punt on legal precedent for Braddon Club development

Anyone passing the corner of Torrens, Cooyong and Donaldson streets, at the edge of Braddon across from Civic, on a weekday would likely notice the ad hoc accumulation of cars surrounding a deserted building. The unassuming appearance of the parcel of land belies the fact that it is subject to a legal battle, after the Canberra Raiders, backed by the ACT Planning and Land Authority, proposed a commercial-residential development, versus the North Canberra Community Council, which supports retaining the land for community use.

A surface-level car park, or grassy, open space? That is the choice being debated for the area surrounding Northbourne Oval in Braddon. Mediation to continue over Raiders’ Braddon Club site

Mediation between North Canberra Community Council and the Canberra Raider’s will continue over the car park at Northbourne Oval but plans for an $80 million development of the Braddon Club site could be headed for the courts. North Canberra Community Council member Leon Arundell said mediation on the Braddon Club plan hadn’t worked and they were deciding whether to pursue the matter in court.

The future of Majura Pines – Have your say

The ACT Government is seeking community feedback on the future use of Majura Pines as a recreation venue in Canberra’s north. Since the late 1980s, Majura Pines has become a venue for mountain bike riding, trail running as well as other recreational pursuits. Following recent forestry operations and construction of the Majura Parkway, Majura Pines currently has around 10 kilometres of fire trails and short sections of unlinked informal trails providing recreational opportunities for the community.

The Canberra District Rugby League Football Club plans to demolish the Braddon Club – which is located on Cooyong Street, between Donaldson and Torrens Streets – and build a residential/commercial development of up to seven storeys. From the 1920s until 1998 the site was part of the Northbourne Oval. In 1998 the Territory wrote off unpaid rents, excised the Braddon Club site from the oval, and granted it to the ACT Leagues Club for five cents per year on condition that it be used only for the purposes of a club with ancillary auditorium and office uses.
