Walter Burley Griffin Society: submission in relation to the ASIO complex on Constitution Avenue

The North Canberra Community Council has obtained permission from the Walter Burley Griffin Society Inc, to republish their submission on the new ASIO building on Constitution Avenue (previously known as the “Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts Commonwealth New Building Project.”)

A reminder to all young people living in Hackett and in school years 5-12  that the Sir John Hackett Essay Competition closes on the 10th August 2009. All young people living in Hackett and in school years 5-12 are invited to enter this competition being held by the Hackett Community Association with the support of local schools and the Australian Dictionary of Biography. Essays should be: 250-500 words long for Years 5-6; approximately 600 words for Years 7-8; 900-1000 words for Years 9-10 and 1000-1200 words for Years 11-12. Ainslie Village "Our Stories" mural

On 2 July 2009, the ACT Minister for Disability and Housing, Mr John Hargreaves launched a mural at Ainslie Village, planned and developed by residents. The “Our Stories” mural project began back in February. Interested Ainslie Village residents were given sketch books and asked to develop ideas representing one of the stories of their lives.

Canberra Times: Race to save 'heritage' cottage

The Canberra Times has an article about the demolition and redevelopment of a weatherboard cottage in Ainslie owned by the ACT Department of Housing and Community Services. A developer acting on behalf of the department lodged a development application to demolish the existing building, and replace it with ”two new brick veneer structures”. It is understood that the building was the caretaker’s cottage in the 1920s for the Ainslie bus terminus, one of Canberra’s first transport hubs, but has been excluded from the Corroboree Park Housing Precinct, a heritage-listed area that ends just over the cottage’s fence.

In the April 7 edition of the City Chronicle, three members of the Watson Community Association were interviewed by Rebecca Thistleton in regard to the redevelopment of the Australian Heritage Village site. In the article there is a discussion of the loss of woodland, recreational facilities and community space.
