Mediation to continue over Raiders’ Braddon Club site

Mediation between North Canberra Community Council and the Canberra Raider’s will continue over the car park at Northbourne Oval but plans for an $80 million development of the Braddon Club site could be headed for the courts. North Canberra Community Council member Leon Arundell said mediation on the Braddon Club plan hadn’t worked and they were deciding whether to pursue the matter in court.

The future of Majura Pines – Have your say

The ACT Government is seeking community feedback on the future use of Majura Pines as a recreation venue in Canberra’s north. Since the late 1980s, Majura Pines has become a venue for mountain bike riding, trail running as well as other recreational pursuits. Following recent forestry operations and construction of the Majura Parkway, Majura Pines currently has around 10 kilometres of fire trails and short sections of unlinked informal trails providing recreational opportunities for the community.

The Canberra District Rugby League Football Club plans to demolish the Braddon Club – which is located on Cooyong Street, between Donaldson and Torrens Streets – and build a residential/commercial development of up to seven storeys. From the 1920s until 1998 the site was part of the Northbourne Oval. In 1998 the Territory wrote off unpaid rents, excised the Braddon Club site from the oval, and granted it to the ACT Leagues Club for five cents per year on condition that it be used only for the purposes of a club with ancillary auditorium and office uses. EDO Offices Face Closure After Federal Funding Cuts

Yesterday the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s department notified each Environmental Defenders’ Office across the country that their funding has been cut, effective immediately. The decision will put real pressure on most of the offices currently operating in each state and territory and could result in some smaller offices, including the EDO (ACT), closing.

We will be holding our Annual General Meeting on 16 October 2013 at 7:30  at ACT Sport House, 100 Maitland Street in Hackett. The draft agenda for the meeting is included in this posting. We have invited three guest presenters. Greg Mews from the National Heart Foundation who will be speaking on integrated urban design and sustainable transport. Larissa Redmond and Chris Taylor from Team Telstra will be speaking on the north Canberra rollout of the National Broadband Network. Before the AGM takes place,the committee intends to propose a special resolution to discuss changes to the Constitution. The changes are in the draft agenda for discussion.
