ACT Policing’s Crime Prevention Team has this week launched a new family violence campaign as part of National Youth Week celebrations which commence this weekend (April 10).
The ‘You Can Speak Out’ campaign aims to raise youth awareness on family violence issues that affect young people within our community and to encourage young people to speak out and report family violence incidents to police.
ACT Policing will be targeting underage drinking and anti-social behaviour at Skyfire tomorrow night (Saturday, March 20), with parents urged to be aware of their children’s whereabouts at all times.
An estimated 130,000 people attended last year’s Skyfire event over Lake Burley Griffin. Of the large crowd, only one adult male was lodged in the Regional Watch House for being intoxicated and disorderly in a public place. However police detained approximately 40 juveniles for intoxication and/or underage drinking.
These minors were held in temporary youth detention areas at the venue, and parents were called to collect them from the event. Similar measures will be in place this year, with police detaining any intoxicated juveniles at City Police Station.
Superintendent Lesa Gale encourages the community to enjoy the Skyfire event, however warned that underage drinking and supplying alcohol to young people would not be tolerated by police.

The Australian Early Development Index (AEDI) is a national measure of how children are developing in communities at school entry. All ACT kindergarten children were surveyed in 2009 through a teacher completed checklist. Results for communities across Australia are available on the AEDI website.
Meetings to share the North Canberra AEDI results with the northside community will be held at Northside Community Services, Rosevaar Place, Dickson on the following dates and times:
- Monday 15 February 2010 (9.00 to 10.30 am)
- Monday 1 March 2010 (7.00 to 8.30 pm)
All community members interested in children’s development are welcome.

ACT Policing has issued a warning of zero tolerance to intoxicated and out-of-control revellers this summer after an incident involving drunken juvenile males early this morning (Thursday, December 4) outside The Cube Nightclub in Civic.
