Pharmacists are calling on the Federal Minister for Health and Ageing to exercise her discretionary powers to allow a pharmacy to be established in Hackett.
Hackett is unable to qualify for a pharmacy under a Federal Government Pharmacy Agreement. Owners of the Griffith Pharmacy Rhonda Warne and Yuko Raimoto have already leased a shop in Hackett for a pharmacy but are now awaiting approval to open it.
The Hackett Community Association (HCA) has been encouraging the establishment of a pharmacy at the local shops because there are many older residents of Hackett who find it difficult to get to nearby pharmacies due to lack of personal transport, poor interconnecting bus services or lack of mobility. This had led to a pharmacist leasing one of the shops at the Hackett Shops and commencing to fit it out in anticipation of obtaining approval to operate the pharmacy. This is a major demonstration of faith in the Hackett Community as it is by no means certain that the pharmacy will be approved by the Federal Government due to the Pharmacy Location Rules.

The July 2010 edition of the Hackett Neighbourhood Watch newsletter is now available online and residents of the suburb of Hackett will have already have received a copy of this publication in their letterboxes.
Hackett is an Inner North suburb of Canberra. It was named after Sir John Winthrop Hackett (1848-1916), who was a newspaper editor and worker for the Federation of Australia. Streets in Hackett are named after scientists.
Hackett is next to Watson, Dickson and Ainslie. It is bounded by Antill street and Philip avenue, and the Canberra Nature Park of Mt Ainslie/Mt Majura, with Mount Majura located behind Hackett to the east. Hackett has a neighbourhood oval, and shopping centre.
