ACT Policing: 24/7 patrols planned as police gear up for Summernats

ACT Policing is scheduling around-the-clock traffic enforcement patrols of the areas surrounding Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) and additional patrols of the city’s entertainment precincts over the Summernats car festival period beginning today (Thursday, January 7). Police intend to clamp down rigorously on any irresponsible and/or dangerous driving behaviour and have issued a reminder to all motorists that under ACT legislation, police have the power to seize vehicles for burnouts, menacing driving or street racing on public roadways.

Murky water clouds Civic Pool (TAMS "penny pinching" false economy?)

Megan Doherty, city reporter from the Canberra Times wrote an article in the 5 November 2009 edition of the newspaper about problems being experienced at the Canberra Olympic Pool in Civic. The article hints at economic shortcuts being taken by Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) as well as indicating that this may be part of a larger plan  to “run down” the pool so that the land may be sold off and reclaimed for other development. Feedback Received: Lyneham Sports Precinct Master Plan

The ACT Department of the Territories and Municipal Services (Sports and Recreation Services Section) invited Canberrans to comment on the future of the Lyneham Sports Precinct revised Master Plan. CBRE Town Planning was engaged by TAMS to evaluate submissions from the public and the response to the Canberra Pedestrian Forum and Pedal power has been reproduced below:

Invitation to comment: Lyneham Sports Precinct Master Plan (closing 11 September 2009)

The ACT Department of the Territories and Municipal Services (Sports and Recreation Services Section) is inviting Canberrans to comment on the future of the Lyneham Sports Precinct revised Master Plan. This revised Master Plan includes: covering the storm water drain that currently divides the area to make the usable area larger and more connected better access through an internal road network, including major entry points more parking and better traffic management which will be important on major event days. Invitation to Comment: Ainslie park name proposal at Block 2 Section 87 (closing 28 August 2009)

ACTPLA (ACT Place Names Section) is seeking your views on a proposal to name the park bounded by Rutherford Crescent and Officer Crescent in Ainslie, Bill Pye Community Park (see map right), commemorating Mr TTW (Bill) Pye MBE. Bill Pye was a resident of Ainslie from 1946; he was an outstanding citizen who was extensively involved in his community. He served with the Australian Military Forces from the outbreak of World War II and then with the United States Forces, seeing action in New Guinea and the Philippines, returning to Australia in 1946.

New owner for Summernats, confirmed to continue at EPIC until at least 2012

ABC News Online are confirming that the new owners of Summernats have signed a three year lease with Exhibition Park and are hoping to extend the event beyond 2012. The sale and continuation of Summernats is also further confirmed with a news entry on the Summernats website. The new promoters have previously produced several large events such as the Pope’s Mass for 400,000 people at Randwick Racecourse for World Youth Day and other large events and festivals around Australia.
