Canberra region launch of 1 Million Women

The Office of the Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment ACT is inviting the public to the Canberra region launch of the 1 Million Women campaign. Since mid 2009, women of all ages, backgrounds and regions are joining the campaign and now total 21,000. The aim is to engage 100,000 Australian women in 2010 and a million by the end of 2012. In Canberra, we are seeking to support this by targeting 20,000 regional women over the next three years. New television recycling arrangements (from 27 April 2010)

From 27 April 2010, televisions will be banned from going to landfill and recycled for a fee at the Mitchell and Mugga Lane Resource Management Centres.The fee will cover the cost of recycling and will range from $15 to $40 per item, depending on its type and size. The scheme will divert around 200 tonnes of televisions from landfill each year and will continue until the National E-waste Scheme is introduced in 2011, which will provide for free e-waste recycling. ACT Government IrrigationSmart trial

The ACT Government is trialling a new program called IrrigationSmart. The trial will assist 200 ACT residents who have automated (programmable) drip irrigation systems to use their system in the most water-efficient way to maintain a healthy garden. Participants in the trial receive: a visit from an irrigation specialist to assess the condition and effectiveness of their automated drip irrigation system; a written report containing the advice and recommendations made by the irrigation specialist; a FREE rain gauge; and are eligible to apply for a rebate of up to $100 for improvements to their irrigation system or garden’s water efficiency. …

Second-hand Sunday is a free community event that gives everyone an opportunity to give away or collect unwanted but useable items from homes across the ACT. Second-hand Sunday is this coming Sunday 28 March 2010, from 9.00am to 3.00pm Registered participants display a Second-hand Sunday poster at the front of their home along with any unwanted but useable items they want to give away.
