The ACT Government has launched a new web initiative “Community Engagement Online“. It appears that the ACT Government has recognized the value that the North Canberra Community website has been providing to the local community over the last eight months. We have consistently provided a “single online source” where individuals can find consolidated and relevant information pertinent to the North Canberra district. Dickson Centre Planning Project – Initial public workshop (25 August 2009)

ACTPLA has engaged external consultants Purdon Associates to manage the Dickson Centre Planning Project. The study will guide future urban planning in the Dickson centre. It will include consultation with the community, community groups, business representatives and other stakeholders to develop a vision for the future of centre. The public are invited to attend an initial visioning workshop on Tuesday 25 August 2009. Volunteers made National Tree Day a success

On Sunday 2 August, more than 140 volunteers from Hackett and surrounding suburbs joined by Ms Caroline Le Couteur MLA, Minister Andrew Barr and Senator Gary Humphries celebrated National Tree Day 2009 by planting over 300 local trees in Mount Majura nature reserve. Friends of Mount Majura (FoMM), Mount Ainslie Weeders, Watson Woodland Working Group and Hackett Community Association, joined forces for the massive workload involved in preparation, planning and planting for the event. The degraded Majura paddock was checked thoroughly of for hazardous materials prior to the event and given a clean bill of health the Environment Protection Authority. …

Hackett: Roads ACT Rules out Pedestrian Crossing on Madigan Street

Over the last couple of years the Hackett Community Association has been discussing with Roads ACT the need for a pedestrian crossing on Madigan Street near the shops. Residents have been concerned about the volume and speed of the traffic on Madigan Street during the morning peak period. This is of particular concern for older residents in the suburb. Invitation to Comment: Ainslie park name proposal at Block 2 Section 87 (closing 28 August 2009)

ACTPLA (ACT Place Names Section) is seeking your views on a proposal to name the park bounded by Rutherford Crescent and Officer Crescent in Ainslie, Bill Pye Community Park (see map right), commemorating Mr TTW (Bill) Pye MBE. Bill Pye was a resident of Ainslie from 1946; he was an outstanding citizen who was extensively involved in his community. He served with the Australian Military Forces from the outbreak of World War II and then with the United States Forces, seeing action in New Guinea and the Philippines, returning to Australia in 1946.
