ACT Policing: 24/7 patrols planned as police gear up for Summernats

ACT Policing is scheduling around-the-clock traffic enforcement patrols of the areas surrounding Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) and additional patrols of the city’s entertainment precincts over the Summernats car festival period beginning today (Thursday, January 7).

Police intend to clamp down rigorously on any irresponsible and/or dangerous driving behaviour and have issued a reminder to all motorists that under ACT legislation, police have the power to seize vehicles for burnouts, menacing driving or street racing on public roadways.

Canberra’s city centre will be the place to party and welcome in 2010.

A huge New Year’s Eve is guaranteed as two sites in Civic play host to a packed program of entertainment, including a family concert in Civic Square, a dance party in Garema Place, and two dazzling fireworks displays at 9pm and midnight.

Today (10 December 2009) the chair of the Standing Committee on Planning, Public Works and Territory and Municipal Services, tabled the Committee’s interim report into Live Community Events, looking at issues around the co-location of residential developments and live event venues.

Megan Doherty, city reporter from the Canberra Times wrote an article in the 5 November 2009 edition of the newspaper about problems being experienced at the Canberra Olympic Pool in Civic.

The article hints at economic shortcuts being taken by Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) as well as indicating that this may be part of a larger plan to “run down” the pool so that the land may be sold off and reclaimed for other development.

The budget cuts and implications of current penny pinching attitudes to public works and maintenance items by TAMS has also been discussed in a recent article on the Gungahlin Community Council website.

The ACT Department of the Territories and Municipal Services (Sports and Recreation Services Section) invited Canberrans to comment on the future of the Lyneham Sports Precinct revised Master Plan.
