Invitation to comment: Working with Vulnerable People Checks (closing 12 October 2009)

The ACT Government is developing a Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) Checks system as part of its commitment to the support and protection of vulnerable people in the ACT.  The checking system will assist in reducing the incidence of abuse of vulnerable persons.    Abuse can include sexual, physical, emotional or financial harm or neglect.

Free Workshops: “Write On” Parents (31 August 2009 & 12 October 2009)

“Write On” Parents is a free, interactive two hour workshop that will provide parents with the skills and resources to identify the handwriting needs of their child and explore the foundational skills necessary for the development of handwriting. The workshop is for parents only. No referrals or assessments are required.

Reminder: Sir John Hackett Essay Competition (Entries close 10 August 2009)

A reminder to all young people living in Hackett and in school years 5-12  that the Sir John Hackett Essay Competition closes on the 10th August 2009. All young people living in Hackett and in school years 5-12 are invited to enter this competition being held by the Hackett Community Association with the support of local schools and the Australian Dictionary of Biography. Essays should be: 250-500 words long for Years 5-6; approximately 600 words for Years 7-8; 900-1000 words for Years 9-10 and 1000-1200 words for Years 11-12. Young Canberrans and those who work with young people are urged to comment on the discussion paper on the new ACT Young Peoples’ Plan 2009-2014. The new plan will set clear benchmarks to make sure we are meeting our goals, in the areas of education, health and wellbeing of children and young people. Issues you may want to comment on include living sustainably and the environment, individual and community wellbeing, moving from education to further training and work, representation of young people in the media and cyber-bullying. Grants of up to $5,000 available under the 2009 Schools as Communities program

The ACT Minister for Children and Youth, has announced that grants of up to $5,000 are available under the 2009 Schools as Communities program Strategic Projects. Schools as Communities is an ACT Government program that works in identified ACT preschools and primary schools to support children, their families and teachers.
