There are currently 19 neighbourhood ovals and three district playing fields sitting idle at the same time as experts rue the lack of safe and affordable sportsgrounds to assist in helping maintain healthy communities. The ACT Government intends to review the status of these potential sportsgrounds on a year-by-year basis. At current rates some communities could be waiting up to 6 or more years before their ovals and fields are given a red or green light for rejuvenation. Two of these (Lyneham and Watson) are in north Canberra. Can we really afford to have ovals sitting idle in areas with expanding populations when communities are eager to assist with forward planning and even labour if necessary? Continue reading »

About 60 people gathered at the site of a proposed 20-vehicle car park at Civic yesterday to protest against it. The development, next to Glebe Park, is opposed by residents of the very apartment block it is designed to service.

Representative of the Glebe Park Apartments’ body corporate and founding member of the Glebe South Action Group, Alan Hastings, said the approval process had ignored the wishes of residents. A lot of us put in an objection [to ACTPLA] … There’s been no comeback, no interest in engaging with us,” Mr Hastings said.

ACTPLA chief planning executive Neil Savery said his organisation’s hands were tied. The issues these people have are not necessarily things ACTPLA can deal with. Part of the problem is … people see undeveloped land and assume it’s parkland. [In this instance] it is not,” he said. Mr Savery said the lessee had an obligation to landscape the area under their lease agreement. Continue reading »

Land that is being considered for redevelopment at EPIC

The National Capital Authority has recently issued Draft Development Control Plan (DCP) No:171/10/0002 in response to proposals for a renewed service station/restaurant on the Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) site; and a $15million hotel complex on the Kamberra winery site on Northbourne Avenue in north Canberra.

The Canberra Times covered both of these stories on March 2. This article contains a transcription of the newspaper articles and Figure 3 extracted from the DCP showing the land subject to the plan. The cut-off date for submissions to the DCP is March 29 2010. The document in full is available from www.nationalcapital.gov.au.
