Director of urban development and design at the University of New South Wales, James Weirick, says the construction race was degrading the nation’s capital. He is particularly scathing of the proposed Nishi development in New Acton in City West.
The 16 January 2010 Canberra Times reports that the Department of Defence has concerns that the alignment of the proposed $250 million Majura Parkway will annex and displace existing Duntroon ovals and create noise problems for residential areas. This issue reenfoces the concerns that the Council has already made with regard to the propsed alignment of the Majura Parkway. In September 2009 the Standing Committee on Planning, Public Works and Territory and Municipal Services extended the closing date for submissions to the Inquiry into Inner North Residential Redevelopment Policies. The closing date for submissions is 30 January 2010.

The ACT Department of the Environment, Climate Change, Energy and Water are soliciting public comment on the proposed Dickson and Lyneham Wetlands Project. The Canberra Integrated Urban Waterways team are working with consultants to design the proposed Dickson and Lyneham wetlands. As well as providing water quality improvements and increased urban aquatic habitat, these water features will supply stormwater to irrigate playing fields in Canberra’s inner north.

There will be no cut off period for the lodgement of Development Applications (DAs) that require notification before the 2009 – 2010 Christmas / New Year Period. However, an additional 10 working days will be added to the notification period for DAs notified between 14 December and Thursday 24 December 2009. ACTPLA Customer Service Centres in Dickson and Mitchell will close at 4.30 pm Thursday 24 December 2009 and re-open at 8.30 am on Monday 4 January 2010.
