A significant revamp to the Ainslie shops, including additional car parking, easier access, new toilet block, playspace, walkway canopy, new seats, bike racks and lighting, is about to commence, Chief Minister and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Jon Stanhope, said today.

“The $1.6 million face-lift for the Ainslie shops will bring new life to the centre which serves a large inner north community,” he said.

“Locals and traders will benefit from a safer, more accessible and more attractive centre.

“There was broad consultation on the upgrades and many of their suggestions were included in the final design,” Mr Stanhope said.

Upgrades to the centre include

  • new street furniture including seats, bins and a community noticeboard
  • new lighting to enhance security;
  • 23 additional car parking spaces;
  • landscaping works;
  • upgrades to paving and lighting to improve pedestrian access;
  • improved stormwater drainage;
  • improvements to parkland including new paths and play facilities;
  • new toilet block; and
  • public artwork.

“The local IGA generously donated funding towards the construction of a walkway canopy connecting the rear car park to the front of the shops.”

“Right across the ACT, dozens of shopping centres, parks and playgrounds are being upgraded by the ACT Government,” Mr Stanhope said.

“The Government will continue to deliver improvements to our public amenities and community places to ensure Canberrans continue to enjoy the best lifestyle in the country.”
